There are things we may believe because we respect those who taught them to us. There are things we know are true because we have experienced them ourselves. Friends of Truth have experienced Jesus Christ present and active within them as individual persons and collectively as His body. He IS our high priest, our shepherd, our teacher, our healer, our savior. We know Him in all these offices and more. It is He who explains the meaning of the Scriptures which He authored. It is He who presides over our worship. It is He who intercedes for us with God the Father. And it is He who works within our deepest parts to expose our faults, to correct them, and to stand between us and satan. It is Jesus Christ, the son of God, who initiates us to the power of the cross and who invites us to the flock of those who have embraced it.
We in the Society of Friends (often called Quakers) devote our personal and our corporate lives to living in this Truth. We cannot teach it to you as a creed, which you can recite to become one of us. We cannot even teach it to our own children. They, too, must learn it by their own experience. But He has said,
And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.(Jer 31:34)
We hope that you, too, will come to know the Lord by your own experience. If you want to share that experience with others, unencumbered by rites and rituals, not needing permission from formal theologians, please visit one of our meetings or write.
