- Here is a glimpse of the life of the newest member of
Winona/Seekers’ Haven, Wally Crawford (the man with shaved
- head and white clothes), who has started a school in Calcutta. He
- is
turning people to Christ through the evangelism of love and
service. The captions are quotes from his
emails.

- But in that whirlwind, there is a Center of Silence - and that Cent=
er
of Silence remains in my heart and again calls to me in a gentle whi=
sper
every morning at 3 am- "Wake up, and listen, wait in the silenc=
e,
'Be still and know that I Am God'"

- But in my heart, in my inner cocoon of silence there is only one name, the Name =
of
Jesus, the Name Abba,
Father, the Name of the Holy Spirit - three Names, but One Name, in the stillness.=
And I listen and breathe in the life-giving Wind of =
God; I
hear the whisper, and
know. And
then- nourished and comforted, at peace with God- I am ready to face the=
daily
crucifixion- I am read=
y to
take up my cross and follow Jesus wherever He leads me, to share in =
the
sufferings of others, to cry
with them, to bleed with them, to rejoice when there is rejoicing and to mourn w=
hen it
is time to mourn.

- And then there's Ranjit. He's an 18 or 19 year old orphan boy
here…he is very intelligent and lives in the building with
the youngest children, where he has the duty of looking after
them. Last night I was telling him of my concern for the railw=
ay
children, but he started telling me that philosophers in India say t=
hat
one should only do service for those people with some
"quality" some potential to develop and should not waste t=
ime
on "just anybody." …I started telling him that =
we,
as human beings, should help the poorest of the poor, and the most
helpless, that everyone deserves to be loved and anyone in need
deserves our care and concern. He answered that over the years,
when he had given service to various children in the orphanage,
that many of them had "betrayed" him, and he had lear=
ned
to be cautious about whom he loved and did things for. So I as=
ked
him to bring out the Bengali New Testament I had given him. I =
had
him turn to Romans 12 and read out loud for me.
- He was deeply moved. He then said that he had read many
philosophers and had heard many teachers and gurus, but that the
teachings of Jesus were higher than those of any others. =
He
said that in India the teachers and philosophers say that one should
develop oneself, one's own mind, and improve oneself, but that
Jesus teaches that we should serve others, and care just as much abo=
ut
them as we care about ourselves. That's a very revolution=
ary
concept here in India. "Thou shalt love the Lord thy=
God
with all thy heart, with all thy soul, with all thy strength, and wi=
th
all thy mind, and thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.&quo=

- This week one of the teachers was telling me how impressed he is wi=
th a
quality about me. He said that I have discipline, and that I k=
eep
my word. How interesting that we Quakers, who have no outward
authority, no human being wielding discipline over us, are easily
discerned as being more disciplined and more obedient to the Light
directing us from our hearts. What an interesting paradox.

- We also have about 6 doctors volunteering and they are giving most =
of
the money out of their own pockets. These men, many of them
Muslims, are amazing. If they lived in America they would each
make over one-hundred thousand dollars per year, if not twice
that. But they live here and doctors aren't rich here. A=
nd
they give and they serve the poorest of the poor.

- Here the Missionaries of Charity sing a beautiful song in which the
chorus is "I thirst for you, I thirst for you..." But
you know something, since my convincement, since I accepted the
promise that if I drink the water which Christ would give me I would
never thirst again, I have stopped being thirsty for God. God =
is
in my heart, always and forever. There will never be a sense of
separation or thirst for Christ's presence again. I am dr=
unk
with the Love of God, intoxicated with the bliss of service.
- Jaya, Jesu!
